Naruto Shippuuden Episode 116 Breakdown and Discussion: Sasuke’s Latest Femme Fatale

Funny, doesn't she have bright red hair and eyes? Regardless, this is Karin.

Guys, you know you love it when you see a woman who dresses like she’s earning money from streetwalking and licks her lips at the thought of a chakra-reeking male.  All I can say is thank god it isn’t a snake tongue that she uses to lick her lips.  Then again, maybe that’s what you guys want, eh?

This is Penny (TsunadesTwin) with our weekly review of the latest Shippuuden episode.  Well, here we are again – on time! (and there was much rejoicing!) – with the weekly saga becoming known as Sasuke and his Ragtag Band of Thieves.  I knew that the opening and ending credits were going to be changing to reflect the arc we are in but…whoa!  When have any of you seen any credits for Naruto or for Shippuuden that rarely showed Naruto?   Not very often and I think this is significant.  It truly shows that Sasuke and his yet-to-be-named team own this arc.  This is their territory so no one from Konoha had better get in their way.  So, you Sasuke fans can rejoice:  Naruto clearly takes a back seat for a while (although it appears that episode 117 will have Naruto and Sakura included briefly…).

Turns out Sasuke’s latest member of the Sasuke Ragtag Band of Thieves is none other than Karin, the late Oro’s assistant.  She’s got definite sex appeal – the too high short shorts (thank god there are no ass cheeks being shown or decimated), the slutty boots/boots with thigh high protectors and an interesting shirt/jacket that leaves absolutely nothing to a guy’s imagination.  The only thing missing is that tattoo on the upper butt side of her back that screams “I’m a whore!”

All we need is an "I'm a whore!" tattoo above her shorts waist band and we have the makings of a complete bitch of a femme fatale.

Suigetsu wonders why Karin is so important to Sasuke’s team.  I wondered too since Sasuke’s main goal in life is to see his brother, Itachi, in the afterlife.   Women and romance are just not on Sasuke’s priority list for the foreseeable future (which has made many wonder about his sexual orientation- stuff that I disagree with).  So, why Karin?  Well, that tongue thing has a lot to do with it.

Only thing I can say is that I am SO glad that snake tongue thing is over with.

Karin has this awesome ability to see and to sense chakra.  “Sweet!” thinks Sasuke.  So, he wants Karin to join his little band.  Except there is one problem – she is in total cahoots with her now-dead boss, Orochimaru.  She often assisted in many of his disgusting experiments, including some on Suigetsu.  Sasuke doesn’t care.  With his very diplomatic flair, he says, in effect, “You, ug, woman!  Me, ug, man.  You, woman be with me, ug!”  The only thing missing is that Sasuke grab her hair and drag her with him.  But, then, Karin has other plans – or so she says.

Oh man. That Uchiha ego thing again. Sasuke? When are you going to learn that just because you say "jump" does not mean everyone around you has to say "How high?"

One other thing that Sasuke notes about Karin – she’s cautious.  Yeah, right, Sasuke.  You call having her kill her test subjects and bury them onsite every time they start to spout off rumors of Oro’s demise “cautious?”  Geez!  I call that paranoid, if you ask me.

Cautious? Paranoid? How about just plain scary?

Cautious? Paranoid? How about just plain scary?

But, once the cat is out of the bag, it is tough to get it back inside.  By this I mean the rumors about Oro’s death.  The prisoners, clearly, have heard everything but are afraid to mention them out loud for fear of Karin’s paranoia death squad.  However, once they get a glimpse of Sasuke and Suigetsu wandering in their area, this fear of reprisal turns into joy – the joy upon realizing that they could finally be free of this psychopathic tyrant of a snake demon.

Wait! Do I smell the pizza man? Sasuke's here to deliver pizza for us! YES!!!

Sasuke finds out that it isn’t easy to be a leader.  He now figures out what his former Sensei, Kakashi, had to deal with when he was a lowly Genin (technically, he still is but then he doesn’t seem to give a damn) – the clash of personalities.  We find out from the very beginning that the group as it is currently comprised is going to have some personality issues.  Karin and Suigetsu fight like cats and dogs from the very start and Sasuke, if he hasn’t already, should be coming to the conclusion that things are not going to be so simple.

Well, well, well.  Now we see that Karin has a change of heart.  But her reason is simple – she is lusting after Sasuke.  But, given the emo guy that he is, Sasuke won’t have any part of it.  However, that doesn’t stop Karin from trying.  Not only does she have an awesome talent, she’s got some serious personality issues.  Oh, grrreat!  Just makes ME want to be on that team.

Ok, Sasuke. Sakura wasn't your type. Don't tell me that "bitch fatale" is now your type?

After a few denials and teasing from Suigetsu, all are off, despite what Karin says.  The next sucker, uh, teammate on the list is none other than Jugo, a well known psychopath that has this thing about killing.  We meet him as he is having a debate as to the sex of the person he plans to kill next – a woman versus a man.

I have this wild urge to kill....something. Don't tell me I'm going to have to wait a week to do so!?!

Ok, ok.  I’m sensing that you are all wondering when the hell is the action going to start.  I must admit that I am now wondering the very same thing.   There is only so much blood you can  squeeze out of a turnip.   There wasn’t much to the canon manga material nor to the filler.  So…I sure hope things get rolling soon or else I am going to be pining  away for Yukimaru again.  Hey!  At least Guren had some awesome jutsu.  And,  screaming for Sasuke on the part of Sakura is not what I call action either.  Let’s get some kick-ass action going here and get this arc moving!!!!

  1. FIRST!!

Amazing review. You’ve inspired me to catch up to the animated series. Can’t wait to see the Kakashi Gaiden ^__^

  2. Very good read as always, thoroughly enjoyed it! looking forward to next weeks =))

  3. hell yeah!! kakashi gaiden ftw! thank God we will soon get some action cuz i was 1 shitty episode away from watching the yukimaru ark all over again…

  4. It seems that this arc is a little more about the characters that are joining Sasuke than about Sasuske himself. Sasuske seems to be hanging out behind a blank stare most of the time. I’m enjoying the new characters alot more than this version of Sasuske. Although I think that Sasuske’s true personality and passions might come out again when he meets his brother Itachi.

It is awesome to be able to see Kakashi’s Gaiden I hope that they include other details or secrets that haven’t been told about Minato’s group.

  5. Great job Penny!
