Naruto Shippuuden Episodes 119-120: Two Heroes on the Battlefront

Does this remind you of yet another team we all know? (If you said Team 7, you'd be right...)

Does this remind you of yet another team we all know? (If you said Team 7, you'd be right...)

“More than ten years ago, the rule of the Five Great Shinobi Nations was destabilized, throwing the world into a conflict later to be known as the Third Great Ninja War. The future Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze assigns young Kakashi, Obito of the Uchiha clan, and Rin, a medical ninja, on a mission to Kannabi Bridge…”

Ah, yes.  The picture above should say it all.  We actually see Kakashi as (gasp!)  a jackass.  And, there is the love triange that Kishi dearly loves.  Rin loves Kakashi and is deeply fond of Obito Uchiha.  Kakashi wants nothing to do with either and Obito adores Rin and HATES Kakashi.  Add that Minato Namikaze has to act as babysitter/referee/lead negotiator.  We have a kid who has a famous father and a tragic history, a female medical nin from a rather ordinary family and another who has a famous surname – and a more legendary chip on his shoulder – and obtains one of the most powerful dojutsu Konoha possesses.  Now we see what Sondaime Hokage was thinking when putting together Team 7!

This is Penny (TsunadesTwin) for the rundown on the latest Naruto Shippuuden special, “A Boy’s Life on the Battlefield.”  I apologize for the massivedelay but my usual computer was not available so I couldn’t get stills from a torrent download.  I tried enlisting some help using the streamed version only to find that anyone who has the nerve to post streams are posting the two part Crunchyroll version, which is a nightmare to work with.  GAAAAHHHHH!  So…I focused on the manga.  As I did so, I realized that I had forgotten about one source – Photobucket.  YES!!!!  And, now you have the breakdown – with anime pics, to boot!

For this one hour Naruto Shippuuden special, we take a journey back in time to the Third Shinobi war – the so-called “silent war.”  It’s hard to imagine that a nearly 30 year Kakashi Hatake (current time) was anything other than a Jonin, but…he was.  We see him the very day he is recognized with his Jonin rank on his team.  If you recall, he was one of the youngest Jonin in Konoha’s history and this piece focuses on him, along with his other now-famous teammates:  Obito Uchiha, Rin and, of course the future Yondaime Hokage (and Naruto’s father), Minato Namikaze. For the record, the uncanny physical ressemblance of Naruto to his father is unmistakable.

Yeah, there IS no doubt. Naruto truly looks like his father...

Yeah, there IS no doubt. Naruto truly looks like his father...

Now, for those of you who have watched Naruto I in its entirety, you know that Kakashi was harsh on his now-famous Team 7 for the concept of teamwork.  However, when we see Kakashi in this moving double episode, he is the 180 degree opposite.  It is all about rules, rules and still more rules – especially that infamous Rule 25. You know…that one that says that shinobi can never show emotion? Yeah, thatone.  And, our young Kakashi has gone over the deep end and is passionate (an irony) about the adherence to rules and regulations.  Obito? Well, he’s on the “team is number 1” bandwagon.  There are so many references to current time but don’t get me started.  I’ll just stick with the episode…

Obito starts off being late and Kakashi chiding him for being so late – again, an irony as Kakashi is now ALWAYS late.

Obito? Don't think you made it...

Obito? Don't think you made it...

Kakashi is arrogant, prideful, holier than thou and never ceases to infuriate Obito. Unlike his soon-to-be-born son, Minato is quiet, patient and focused on his mission.  Then there are rules, rules, rules…

How many times have you just wanted to deck someone who nagged you about rules?

How many times have you just wanted to deck someone who nagged you about rules?

And, as with Sakura, Rin is the loving peacemaker – without the very explosive temper.  She adoresKakashi and is equally fond of her teammate Obito

One incredible medic nin and her name is Rin...deeply compassionate and without an explosive temper.

One incredible medic nin and her name is Rin...deeply compassionate and without an explosive temper.

Kakashi has made it to the Jonin level and is to be receiving gifts from his comrades – ok, demanding gifts from his comrades.  All give a gift except Obito – Rin, a medic kit, Minato one of his famous kunai.  Obito has absolutely no clue but won’t admit it.  Kakashi states that anything Obito had to give him would be useless baggage.  Whoa!!!!  This is not the Kakashi Hatake that we’ve all grown to love!

Well, Obito has had more than enough of this emotional abuse from his extremely egotistical Jonin.  Never mind, the chip on his shoulder has only expanded as his Sharingan has not “awakened.”  So, he considers himself to be the “black sheep Uchiha.”

"I am Obito Uchiha!" Yeah, well, we see that Uchiha pride hasn't been lost on this guy!"

"I am Obito Uchiha!" Yeah, well, we see that Uchiha pride hasn't been lost on this guy!"

The major focus of the story is a huge infiltration mission.  The team is to split off into two – Minato handling things on his own (remember, he’s Konoha’s Yellow Flash) and Kakashi, in his first time as a taichou (team leader), will lead the rest.  Their job is simple – blow up a major supply bridge.  Well, you’d think it would be simple but, of course, it isn’t.  It IS war, after all.  The ultimate task is to stop the advancing Hidden Stone ninja from infiltrating the Hidden Grass country – which happens to border the Fire Country.  Kakashi is now the lead Jonin of a three man cell comprised of himself, Obito and Rin.  Minato goes on alone to the front line…

First Minato wants Kakashi to cover him but then Kakashi’s ego takes over and wants his rather well-known Sensei to cover him.  (You see a problem like I do?)And…Kakashi demonstrates this new and awesome jutsu – one of his now- stand-bys, Chidori.  Turns out that the name originates from his Sensei’s codename.

His first chidori - a move that is now one of Kakashi's favorites. Note the lack of Sharingan...

His first chidori - a move that is now one of Kakashi's favorites. Note the lack of Sharingan...

He did it with both of his eyes – and missed badly – only to have his Sensei bail him out in an amazing move:

Um...what can I say? Simply amazing!

Um...what can I say? Simply amazing!

There was a catch to this move – it was a classic “Yellow Flash” tech – his specially marked kunai left a tracking mark on him so he could teleport back and eliminate the enemy.  And, the speed is…well, you get the idea:

Yeah, pal. You should have moved while you had even a slim chance. However, this is Konoha's Yellow Flash you are dealing with...

Yeah, pal. You should have moved while you had even a slim chance. However, this is Konoha's Yellow Flash you are dealing with...

An injured – and humbled Kakashi – return to safety.  Then the infighting continues only to have Minato chew the two of them out.  And…Kakashi receives a direct order – never use Chidori again.  What?!?  (Sounds like FRS to me…).  The final scathing lesson of all?  It is one that eventually carries forward with Kakashi…”To a Ninja the most important thing is teamwork.”  So much for that damn Rule 25!

Just before the mission, Obito wonders just how he is going to “fit in” with the arrogant jonin Kakashi.  Obito asks his Sensei, the future Yondaime Hokage, “What’s the deal with Kakashi?”

A Sensei and student heart-to-heart. An incredible moment for all of us as we finally hear the painful story of Kakashi.

A Sensei and student heart-to-heart. An incredible moment for all of us as we finally hear the painful story of Kakashi.

Very reluctantly, Minato reveals some very painful information.   We finally hear the story of “White Fang” Hatake and that infamous mission – the one that changed how Konoha conducts missions.

A man revered by all only to become a man disgraced for merely doing the right thing...protecting his comrades.

A young boy finds his now-dead father...no wonder Kakashi is hellbent on rules. Sad...

Once the two groups separate, things go terribly wrong for Kakashi in his first mission as a Jonin.  He senses the enemy and Obito backs him up but…Rin is now a POW.  Then, the REAL fighting begins – between Kakashi and Obito.  Go after Rin or continue the mission?  Will she live or die?  Is she a POW or merely bait?  How will she be treated?  This is when the conflict between Obito and Kakashi come to a head – and end in punches:

Nice punch, Obito! Hopefully this humbles Kakashi a bit...

Nice punch, Obito! Hopefully this humbles Kakashi a bit...

The only thing that Kakashi has to say is that Obito MUST obey him as the captain – and that a shinobi must not give into his emotions; that emotions are “useless baggage.”  Gaahhhhhh!  Kakashi…

Minato makes it to the front line of the battle only to find that Konoha is about to be annihilated.  Well, not to worry, we have our hero on the front line.  We finally get to see Naruto’s dad at work – as Yellow Flash.

Konoha's Yellow Flash arrives for battle.

Konoha's Yellow Flash arrives for battle.

Meanwhile, Kakashi is having some serious second thoughts about what had just occurred.  His shoulder is now hurting and his conscience is really nagging him.  On top of that, his Sensei’s lecture is really adding fuel to the guilt trip.  And…then there is the one man he refuses to mention:  White Fang, his father.  While this head trip is happening, Rin is under the effects of the enemy’s genjutsu for interrogation purposes.  Obito locates Rin and the enemy’s hideout only to find he is in over his head…Only to have Kakashi save him from certain death from a Doton Camoflage jutsu.  However, it isn’t long before that now-famous incident happens – where Kakashi loses his left eye due to a knife slash.  Little does Kakashi know, that incident would provoke the Sharingan to appear in Obito which proves to be beneficial in trying to free Rin from her prisoners.

There's nothing better than great timing. What a time for the Sharingan to awaken!

There's nothing better than great timing. What a time for the Sharingan to awaken!

With a timing remiscent of Naruto and Sasuke, Kakashi and Obito along with the Sharingan manage to free Rin…but at a heavy price.

To this day, Kakashi takes this ultimate gift seriously...Obito has always been with him since.

To this day, Kakashi takes this ultimate gift seriously...Obito has always been with him since.

Obito finds himself trapped under a boulder with his right side smashed and he notes he is quickly dying.  Kakashi, as a result, blames himself for his foolishness and his arrogance – something he does to the present time (if you remember “Crush the Leaf” he reveals that to Yugao at the gravesite of heroes).  As a present, he gives Kakashi his remaining Sharingan in a very skillful surgery performed by Rin.  It is the ultimate gift for someone Obito has finally come to view as a friend -as does Kakashi.  And, Kakashi does not take this gift lightly, as we all know.   The one thing about the Sharingan:  it allowed Kakashi to finish his new technique – Chidori, which another Uchiha, Sasuke Uchiha, has taken to new heights.

Chidori as we know it today - WITH Obito's Sharingan.

Chidori as we know it today - WITH Obito's Sharingan.

As we all know, the mission is completed and was considered a success.  However, as with all war, there are casualties. One gave his life and one continously tortures himself with the knowledge of the life he could have saved.  Now we all understand a very aloof yet private man with a very private anguish that follows him through to this day…

Well, that’s all from here.  I am sooooo sorry for this rather untimely delay but I promise I will work hard to get the next two out on time.  Oh, how I can’t wait for my other computer to become available again!

  1. great breakdown! cant wait to see Pain in the anime!

  2. nice one……….. but i want to know about WHITE FANG……….

Hey, if you had watched the anime or read the manga, you should know but….Sakumo Hatake was regarded as a genius ninja, far more so than even the Sannin. There was a mission to which he was assigned to lead and it put his team in danger. He called off the mission – only to have the enemy they were to attack during the mission attack Konoha with high casualties. Sakumo was held to ridicule with even his own teammates mocking him. Kakashi, who was without a mother for much of his life, idolized his father. However, Kakashi was the one to find that Sakumo had committed suicide as a result of the failed mission. There. Now, you have it…
