Naruto Shippuuden Episode 125: Tobi “Dies,” Konoha’s On the Hunt and Akatsuki’s True Goals Revealed

Whoa!  Looks like Deidara wasn’t the only casualty in his final artistic feat.   Question is: who?

Yeah, you went out with a bang...and with incredible admiration. But, who else did you take with ya?

Yeah, you went out with a bang...and with incredible admiration. But, who else did you take with ya?

This is Penny (TsunadesTwin) with this week’s breakdown on “Disappearance.” As I watched this, I thought of what was happening in the manga at this time. In my opinion, this is a pivotal episode – so for those of you who haven’t watched it, you should.  Why?  Well, there are glimpses of the past, the present and…dun, dun, duuhhhhhnnnn!…the future.  And, with that I include the previews for next week’s episode, “Twilight.”

Ok, so we leave the blasting off to Deidara and what a blast it turns out to be. This guy really went mad, I think.  However, and one of my kids pointed this out to me, the blast takes on the shape of one of the Shy Guys from the Nintendo Mario game series.  The blast spread for 10 km (for those of us in the US, that’s the equivalent of approximately 6 2/3 miles).  Now, THAT’S a blast!

Now, doesn't this look like one of those Shy Guys from Super Mario Bros?

Now, doesn't this look like one of those Shy Guys from Super Mario Bros?

Unfortunately for Deidara, and he even acknowledges it, he doesn’t just aim to take out Sasuke.  Nope.  He realizes that his own partner, Tobi, may be coming along for the ride to the Akatsuki Underworld.  Yeah, he’s cracked.   He’s gone mad.  Just shows you how self-centered these Akatsuki types can be. However, you just got to love their jutsu – and that cool organ music!

It appears that Tobi is an unwitting(?) victim of Deidara's artistic blast

It appears that Tobi is an unwitting(?) victim of Deidara's artistic blast

Now, off in the not-so-far distance, characters affected by all of this observe this intense blast:  the Konoha Team of 8, the entire village of Konoha and…the remaining three members of Taka.  Karin tries to sense Sasuke’s chakra only to find that she can’t.  Apparently, Suigetsu received the equivalent of “In Case of Emergency, Open Scroll” item from Sasuke:  the summoning scroll for Manda, Oro’s cantankerous snake summoner.  The snake symbol disappeared to indicate that Sasuke’s chakra can’t be detected and that means…

Suigetsu uses the "In case of emergency" option; summon Manda.

Suigetsu uses the "In case of emergency" option; summon Manda.

All are run to the source.  However, Suigetsu is the first to arrive on the scene of carnage.  He summons Manda and discovers that not only has Sasuke survived (that damn Sharingan again plus teleportation this time) but Manda has actually died while holding Sasuke in his mouth.  As Manda dies, he curses Sasuke for his usage of the Sharingan.  Another piece of Oro is now history.

It isn't often you see Sasuke look this bad. But...get used to it.

It isn't often you see Sasuke look this bad. But...get used to it.

Of course Naruto and Sakura are stunned at the blast as is the remainder of the Team of 8.  They run to the site only to discover that the trail for Sasuke’s scent runs cold.  However, Kakashi notes that one of the scents was Deidara’s – the Akatsuki he fought way back in the Gaara Arc.  As everyone laments their predicament, Kiba comes to their rescue.  As it turns out that Inuzuka blood runs deep and, through his ninja hound abilities,  he realizes that:  1)  Sasuke is alive; 2) Sasuke has used a teleportation technique to save his ass and 3) Sasuke is nearby and resting.  One other thing:  Sasuke has built a unit which shakes everyone into the realization that his goal of killing Itachi is very real and just may happen. Everyone runs thinking they finally have a chance to capture him.

This is your best chance yet to bring Sasuke home. Question is, will you make it?

This is your best chance yet to bring Sasuke home. Question is, will you make it?

While this is happening, a serious shift in focus has taken place.  For as long as Naruto can remember, he has been a target.  Unknown to him, he has been declared as Akatsuki’s Most Wanted.  He is now a marked man…

So, what’s Akatsuki’s take on all this?  Well, as you would expect, Zetsu gives the grim report on Deidara’s and Tobi’s passing.  An interesting thing has happened in Akatsuki.  The most talkative of the bunch is now Kisame and, as such, asks about the details such as…who did it?  Zetsu reports that it was Sasuke that did the deed but…then reports that Sasuke appears to have been killed in the blast.  This report brings a very interesting reaction from Itachi.  Now, Itachi is a very obedient sort and doesn’t question his orders or his superiors.   This time, we see a reaction:

Hmmmm...it has always been hard to read Itachi. What exactly is he feeling about the "news" about Sasuke? Relief? Sadness or...?

Hmmmm...it has always been hard to read Itachi. What exactly is he feeling about the "news" about Sasuke? Relief? Sadness or...?

What’s both sad and interesting is the reaction of the death of Deidara and Tobi.  Tobi is merely mentioned as “replaceable” while Pain mentions that he will be “mourning in silence” over Deidara and that his loss was “unfortunate.” Huh?  At least Kisame says Tobi was talented in lightening up the mood of the gloomy Akatsuki.  What gives here?  That has to be more than meets the eye here.

Ok, Pain. What gives? You mourn the loss of Deidara while Tobi gets a passing mention? Is there something more to this?

Ok, Pain. What gives? You mourn the loss of Deidara while Tobi gets a passing mention? Is there something more to this?

Turns out…there is more to the story.   More on that later.

As we leave the Akatsuki cave until the next time, Itachi and Kisame await the end of the rain.  Kisame wonders what his “cold” partner is thinking – and that it appears he (Itachi) is crying.  One other thing:  he mentions that the rain will ruin Itachi’s health.  Huh?  Turns out, this is also something very significant:  Itachi is seriously ill and weakening fast.  This fact will become apparent later…and, it turns out, Itachi knows his brother is not dead after all.

What's he thinking? So hard to read, ya know. However, he knows Sasuke is alive and waiting - for him.

What's he thinking? So hard to read, ya know. However, he knows Sasuke is alive and waiting - for him.

As you can imagine, Sasuke looks like crap – and probably feels that way, too. Of course all have to rest for the rest of the mission.  And, as always, Karin and Suigetsu go at it.  Juugo, ever devoted to Sasuke, attends to Sasuke’s wounds without complaint.

Ever devoted to his leader, Juugo attends to Sasuke's wounds with kindness.

Ever devoted to his leader, Juugo attends to Sasuke's wounds with kindness.

However, in the melee, Sasuke asks about progress in locating Itachi:  Karin – nada, Suigetsu – general info but with a twist.  He discovers what Akatsuki is after – Jinchuuriki.  For Sasuke…that means Naruto.  But what emotion does he feel about this?

Sasuke realizes that Naruto is now a wanted man by Akatsuki. But what is Sasuke thinking about this?

Sasuke realizes that Naruto is now a wanted man by Akatsuki. But what is Sasuke thinking about this?

Juugo has the best information of all and that is the location of several hideouts thanks to his animal friends and Suigetsu acknowledges that rather unique and useful ability.  But…Karin and Suigetsu; like oil and water…yeah. They keep on fighting until…

Would you two knock it off?!? Geez! You have an injured comrade and all you can do it attack each other?

Would you two knock it off?!? Geez! You have an injured comrade and all you can do it attack each other?

…Juugo’s killer impulse appears without warning.  For once Karin and Suigetsu join forces to restrain him from killing anyone and anything in his path.   However, with one Sharingan, Sasuke stops the progression, to the amazement of the others.

Whew! Were you guys lucky or what? This could have been REAL bad.

Whew! Were you guys lucky or what? This could have been REAL bad.

We leave this ragtag group called Taka wondering about WTH they are there in the first place as Sasuke sleeps off his injuries.  As Suigetsu acknowledges, he is not going to leave, Karin – who knows?  But, Juugo makes the most profound statement of all:  he NEEDS Sasuke.  He needs him to keep his killer instincts under control – that he is the only link he has left to Kimimaro and cannot leave.  To me, this is a sad state of affairs – to think of Sasuke as a leader when he, himself has selfish motives?  Hmmm….

Now, we see what is coming.  We now see, for the very first time in the anime, the “leader” of Akatsuki, Pain.  There is another beside him, Konan. And, another musical theme for him – one that sounds like a religious choir. Very interesting indeed.  The direction this is taking is very clear – dark, sinister and filled with death.

We've seen you in teleportation mode. Now, here you are: Pain and Konan. Get to know these faces as we are going to see A LOT more of them.

We've seen you in teleportation mode. Now, here you are: Pain and Konan. Get to know these faces as we are going to see A LOT more of them.

And, they are awaiting…someone.  But, who?  And, they are asking about Sasuke?  WTH?  Well, again, it is all about that damn Sharingan and how well it has developed.  Imagine a Sharingan that can surpass Itachi’s.  Apparently, someone seems to think so – but who?  And, one other thing…remember I mentioned how Itachi’s health wasn’t the best.  There is yet another oblique reference to this fact in that Sasuke “doesn’t have much time left” in the context of his confrontation with Itachi.

However, there is one other thing that is discussed:  Naruto’s capture.  Pain is also put in charge of it and failure is “not an option,” according to this very mysterious person giving the orders.  WTH?  I thought Itachi was in charge?  Wait, that’s right…these guys must be anticipating Itachi’s eventual demise.  Geez!  Things are moving faster here than I thought!

Your order is simple: hunt down and capture the Kyuubi. Wait! That's Itachi's target. GAAHHHH. I can't keep up!

Your order is simple: hunt down and capture the Kyuubi. Wait! That's Itachi's target. GAAHHHH. I can't keep up!

With the words, “Uzumaki Naruto is no longer just a child…”  the mission becomes clear.  The Kyuubi is the final target – and considered to be the most prized of all the bijuu.  Naruto has many friends and allies.  Then there’s the issue of the Fuuton Rasen-Shuriken and how it destroyed two of Kakuzu’s lives in a single blow.  This is supposed to “inform” Pain but we see that this guy has yet to be defeated in battle – yet – and intimidation is clearly not evident.  Should it be?  Come to think of it, emotion of any kind is not evident.  What gives?

Yeah, yeah. Tell us more, Konan. Wait! Why isn't Pain defending his battle record himself? Hmmm...

Yeah, yeah. Tell us more, Konan. Wait! Why isn't Pain defending his battle record himself? Hmmm...

Ok, so we thought we heard Akatsuki’s true plans – to be able to monopolize the war trade.  Somehow, I didn’t think that was the true goal.  Now, we KNOW it isn’t.  Again…and hold off on the gagging until I’m done…it comes down to that goddamned Sharingan.  HUH?!?  Well, once you see the hidden speaker – and his name – you will finally understand:

Tobi lives?!? No! Wait! Madara Uchiha?!? You're supposed to be DEAD!?! YOU have been behind all of this?!? Oh, great, here comes that Sharingan thing again...

Tobi lives?!? No! Wait! Madara Uchiha?!? You're supposed to be DEAD!?! YOU have been behind all of this?!? Oh, great, here comes that Sharingan thing again...and no more funny laughter and jokes

Well, there you have it; bits and pieces of the current mission and some very strong hints of what is to come.  NOW, I am totally excited.  God, I hope there is not a filler arc in-between all of this.

Now…for a very big surprise announcement in the upcoming episodes!

“The Legend of the Gutsy Ninja” will be a one hour anime episode!!!!!!  Now, as you may have sensed in the previews for “Twilight” something huge is coming involving Jiraiya and Tsunade.  Well…Legend of the Gutsy Ninja is part of that.  For those of you who don’t know, the “Legend of the Gutsy Ninja” is the first book that Jiraiya ever wrote.  For Naruto personally and for the rest of us it has – and will – have a very big significance as the anime progresses.  Woo Hoo!

Here is the preview of the final moments between Tsunade and Jiraiya. Get your hankies out.

  1. Ah….Deidara has always been so cool. I liked Sasuke until he became evil. There is a reason why it’s called Sasuke Syndrome (when a best friend turns evil). You see it everywhere.

Though, since the coming of Shippuden, I like Itachi a whole lot better now. ❤

  2. Nice breakdown Penny. I thought this was a good episode. Pain and Konan finally appear which is somthing ive been waiting for. i thought that Pain looked weirdly animated at first but the seen at the end made up for it. The music when Madara was revealed was Perfect!

  3. I loved this episode like I said; very pivotal and I can’t wait for what’s next – the precursor to the battle between Sasuke and Itachi…and beyond. 😀

  4. Hmm. I think they should’ve kept the Rinnegan a silver color … but oh well. He still looked cool though.

  5. I can say with complete certainty that I will be bawling like a little girl quite soon over this damn anime…*sigh*

  6. @Ms. mandi: what happend to “just a joke”?

You can check out Mandi’s Just a Joke here she gave us the link some time ago.

  8. thanks

  9. Hey great breakdown! Deidara was really so cool…I was also wondering about why the Akatsuki leader stated that “…he will be “mourning in silence” over Deidara and that his loss was “unfortunate.” ”

You said that there will be “more on that later” and that there really is more to the story. But you didnt mention it again. were you referring to that or something else, cuz i really would like to know if there was more to the story.

Arrgh no shippuden next week! But i see that they are doing a double episode the week after wooohoo! Totally worth it, i can’t wait to read your breakdown on that 🙂

  10. @1angel: I mentioned that “more on that later” and was rather vague. My bad. I was referring to the fact that there was more to Tobi and why he was considered “disposable.” It was the fact that he was actually Madara and, as his goofy side of Tobi, he had served his purpose.

  11. oe amiguito deidara es mu mujer…………

  12. What about a new breakdown? It’s been a long time since a last one…

  13. I love this episode, I can’t wait for the next episode, the scenes make you want more of naruto.

  14. doooooflvsdjvkglbgffdxgfbvghgghghhjjfsdfd dfdghgfgjgfbvvnbnnbn
