Naruto Shippuuden Episode 126: An Incredible Discovery, Tsunade’s Fatal Bet and a Strange Meeting

This episode is merely the beginning of the end…for more than one.  Yup, another transition/pivotal episode.  You may want your hankies available.

Say goodbye to an old friend. You know as well as we do...Jiraiya isn't coming back.

Say goodbye to an old friend. You know as well as we do...Jiraiya isn't coming back.

This is Penny (TsunadesTwin) with the weekly lowdown on Naruto Shippuuden.  The episode is titled “Twilight,” which would strongly hint that the winds of change are starting to blow yet again – much like when Asuma died.  For many, Asuma was a “sacrificial piece” on a shougi board (as he himself put it).  This time, we have two; both are highly prized pieces.  One is from the opposing side and one is an old friend and someone very close to and incredibly important to Naruto and a HUGE favorite of many of us (including me)…but I’ll get to that later.

*whispers* Psst…did you know that the Fourth Hokage is Naruto’s dad?!?

Jiraiya’s found the “mother lode.”  What do I mean?  Well, what would be a major find for those in Konoha right now?  Sasuke?  Itachi?  The way for Naruto to control the Kyuubi?  A second location for Ichiraku?  If you said any of those, I’d probably perform that “flying kick no jutsu” on all of you.  No!  It’s where Akatsuki is located – and where that new guy, Pain, resides – in the Land of Rain (Mist).  Whoa!  Now that’s HUGE guys.  Looks like Jiraiya’s years of scouring the various countries for information on threats to Konoha has paid off big time.

This is HUGE. Probably bigger than either Tsunade's boobs or the sequel to Icha Icha.

This is HUGE. Probably bigger than either Tsunade's boobs or the sequel to Icha Icha.

Tsunade is absolutely overjoyed and wants to jump the gun on an invasion.  Well…Jiraiya wants to proceed with caution.  Remember, this is the “married couple” of the Sannin; Jiraiya and Tsunade.  They argue, argue and argue some more yet they deeply love one another (but never admit it to each other, let alone anyone else).  Hey, these two are in the “twilight” of their Shinobi lives.  Many shinobi don’t live to be middle age, ya know.  The fact that these two war heroes have made it to the Kage level – since Jiraiya was the initial pick for Godaime Hokage I consider him to be of that level, too – is all the more impressive.  And, they have done what they are supposed to do:  take on younger apprentices and impart their knowledge and wisdom to both.  So, what’s left for them?  Yeah, go to the local bar for some sake.  Huh?!?  Like I said…this is Jiraiya and Tsunade.

Nice one, Tsunade. Drinking on the job? Bad, very bad...

Nice one, Tsunade. Drinking on the job? Bad, very bad...

*whispers* Psst….did ya hear me?  The Fourth Hokage is Naruto’s dad.  He’s some guy named Minato – and Jiraiya’s student.

Ok, now how many times did you see the Sondaime Hokage go to a bar?  Yup, nada, zero.  Well, again, this is Jiraiya and Tsunade with Tsunade even drinking sake straight out of the bottle – geez!  You can’t teach an old dog new tricks for the most part.  Old habits die hard and Jiraiya and Tsunade try to reminisce about those “good old days.”  But also…Jiraiya has decided to infiltrate the Land of Rain by himself, which Tsunade does not want.  She receives a horrible rebuke from her old friend:  he must in order to both defend Konoha and to set a good example to the younger generation.    What’s a “good example?”  Well, do what Asuma did – work your arse off and die in the line of duty to protect and to defend Konoha for the future.

Jiraiya's right, Tsunade. The name "Sannin" has a huge meaning here...

Jiraiya's right, Tsunade. The name "Sannin" has a huge meaning here...

*whispers hoarsely* Psst…did ya hear me?!?  Naruto’s dad is the Fourth Hokage and his mom’s some chick named Kushina…

Then there is the continued hunt for both Sasuke and Itachi.  While out for supplies, Karin senses a large chakra presence that is heading in their direction.  She analyzes it further and determines it is our Konoha crew with Ninja hounds.

Yup, your worst nightmare - Konoha - is on to your location. Time to get the h*ll outta there.

Karin runs in a panic to inform Sasuke about the unwelcome visitors who are coming.  As if he were never injured he orders a hasty exit and then realizes that he has been healing faster since he absorbed Oro’s powers.  You’d think he’d know what powers he picked up from his now deceased Master.  Well, they have intel on Akatsuki and plan to use it.

Juugo has been busy and providing useful information to Sasuke. Now, they decide to use it.

Juugo has been busy and providing useful information to Sasuke. Now, they decide to use it.

As an insurance policy, Karin takes an old shirt of Sasuke’s and tears it into rags.  Juugo provides birds and the smell disburse everywhere – not to mention the very fact that Sasuke is on the move again.  Now, Kiba has no clue as to what to do – his sensory powers are of no use since the scents are disbursing.    Naruto uses his Kage Bunshin for it’s intended purpose – to hunt down and pinpoint the location of a target with that knowledge returning to him and the rest of the team.

Great thinking! Kage Bunshins aren't thrown off by scent...I'm sure Kiba will be happy for the assist.

Great thinking! Kage Bunshins aren't thrown off by scent...I'm sure Kiba will be happy for the assist.

And, Sasuke finds the very hideout where Itachi was most recently.  Hmmmm…can it be that the long-awaited battle is coming?

A leader moving towards his goal...Itachi. The battle has begun.

A leader moving towards his goal...Itachi. The battle has begun.

Naruto eventually gets separated from the pack by sensing chakra.  Is it Sasuke?  Itachi?  Or…anyone else?

Stay put Naruto. You have a Sharingan user...but which one?

Stay put Naruto. You have a Sharingan user...but which one?

Damn it for Karin’s birds to pinpoint Naruto’s location to the mysterious Sharingan using figure in the distance.  Gradually it becomes clear…Itachi.  Itachi?!? Wasn’t he the target?  Yup.  Already we see a “failed mission” stamp going into the files of the Team of 8, as does Naruto.  With the words, “Reveal yourself, Uzumaki Naruto…” Naruto knows the game is up.  However, what does Itachi want?

Itachi wants to chat? Hmmmm...this is strange. This isn't exactly a meeting that Naruto wants...

Itachi wants to chat? Hmmmm...this is strange. This isn't exactly a meeting that Naruto wants...

He doesn’t seem to be working very hard to capture Naruto, his original Jinchuuriki target.   That’s what Naruto wants to know too – why isn’t he working harder to capture him?  What?  He wants to talk?  Just talk?  Oh yeah -there’s that stupid genjutsu that Naruto is so good at getting out of (not!) – though he does show he has learned something from Elder Chiyo:  One on One, you run, two on one you get the back blind spot of the Sharingan.  With Itachi, watch his fingers….He chooses option two; get the backside.  Nice idea but… to no avail.

Niiiice! However, this is Itachi you are dealing with. Careful...

Niiiice! However, this is Itachi you are dealing with. Careful...

What does Itachi want to talk about?  Well, his brother Sasuke and why Naruto is sooooo determined to bring him home even after Sasuke and Oro’s goons nearly killed him and several comrades on that horrendous “Retrieval” mission and the heartache and misery of the past three years.  It’s simple – Naruto thinks of him as a brother and…dare he say it…says he’s been more of a brother than Itachi ever was.  Now, how’s that, Itachi?

Run away? Me? Not when I can capture you and bait Sasuke...complete my mission.

Run away? Me? Not when I can capture you and bait Sasuke...complete my mission.

Still, Itachi wants more…talk.  And he applies the genjutsu heavier to keep Naruto right where he wants him.  Ugh!

I'm sure Naruto is thinking, "All this for a conversation?"

I'm sure Naruto is thinking, "All this for a conversation?" Couldn't we have used Instant Messenger for this?

Then…we see Naruto’s release from the genjutsu and a smile from Itachi.  WTH?  And, where is Itachi going in such a  hurry?  Is it time for dango and tea?  And, hey!  You forgot your target.  Now, things are really getting weird – or, are they?   Itachi sure isn’t acting very Akatsuki-like, is he?  Well, you can consider Itachi the equivalent of “dead man walking” (a term used for death row inmates who are taking that last walk to be executed) though Naruto won’t ever know it until later.

*barely above a whisper*  Now, for the love of Konoha, Naruto’s dad is Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage.  His mom is, uh, Kushina Uzumaki…you got that?

Meanwhile, the Konoha Team of 8 are having a helluva time tracking Sasuke’s scent, but find Naruto – alone.  Everyone wonders WTH happened as Naruto appears shaken by…something.   He dismisses it to the others and wants to move on but…I wonder if Kakashi and Yamato even have a clue that there’s more to this story…

Then comes that conversation.  You know the one.  The one that took place in the manga over a year and a half ago.  The one that was the worst-kept secret since Luke Skywalker found out who HIS dad was (sorry, I am a passionateStar Wars fan).  The one where the information that Minato Namikaze, the Yondaime Hokage, is Naruto’s father and a young kunoichi named Kushina Uzumaki, his mother.   Ok, that’s covered now.  Tsunade and Jiraiya reminisce over the past (you only do that if you suspect you are only going to see that person for the last time) and…Why?  Tsunade knows that the infiltration mission she is sending Jiraiya on could very likely result in his death.  Jiraiya knows it too and the mood is somber between them.

Two old friends realizing that the end is near...the twilight of their relationship.

Two old friends realizing that the end is near...the twilight of their relationship.

As a result, Tsunade wants to ditch the Hokage Palace and join Jiraiya as back up.  Of course, Jiraiya says “thanks but no thanks.”  After all, she is the Hokage.  Think about it:  if Jiraiya dies, she will be the only Sannin left.  And, her best friend – and the man she truly loves dearly – will die.  Knowing this fact, he tells Tsunade to place a bet that he will die on this mission.  WHAT?!?  Well, we all know how she sucks at bets.  When she wins she thinks it’s an omen, of course.  But the catch is…what if Jiraiya comes back?  Then there’s this very awkward silence.  We all know what is meant by it – if he comes back alive, he will pursue her relentlessly but then, in a very Naruto-type fashion says “just kidding.”  Gaahh! Men!

Tsunade? You can't deny it...you love that Pervy Sage. Never mind, it was always known how he felt about you.

Tsunade? You can't deny it...you love that Pervy Sage. Never mind it was always known how he felt about you.

So, place the bet she does – and, basically, declares Jiraiya as “dead man walking” (see Itachi, above).  That’s the bad part about being commander-in-chief.  Sometimes, you have to send loved ones to their deaths.

A sad, bittersweet farewell...

A sad, bittersweet farewell...

So, where do we go from here?  Jiraiya is off on an extremely dangerous mission that ANBU should have probably have taken on, Sasuke can’t be retrieved so Konoha fails it’s mission while Itachi fails at his Akatsuki mission by letting his target go.  Catch all of that?  Well…the only thing left is the one thing that Sasuke has been living for, training for and killed Orochimaru over:  Defeat Itachi, his older (and only) brother.  I feel flashbacks coming on…

Next week we have an “off week” but in two weeks we have Jiraiya’s turn at having Chronicles.  His very first book, “Legend of the Gutsy Ninja” will be a one-hour Naruto Shippuuden special.  Don’t miss out on that one as this piece, again, will become pivotal to the anime (very much like it is in the manga).   And, unlike Kakashi’s Gaiden, I will have that one out FAST.

Upcoming Episodes:

September 17th – No Naruto Shippuuden episode; an off-week.

Naruto Shippuuden Episode 127-128:  ”Naruto Shippuuden Special: Tale of the Gutsy Ninja ~ The Jiraiya Ninja Chronicles ~ Part 1 and 2″ (NARUTO Hayate den supesharu ~ Do konjou nin den Ji rai ya ninpouchou ~ Zenpen, Kōhen )) – air date, September 24, 2009

Until then, Ja…

  1. *Sniff* X[

  2. lol what!? Jiriya gaiden? that wasnt in the manga was it? are they using this as an excuse to show ma and pa frog early? o well as long as it dosent show the Nagato Konan, and Yahiko flashbacks early ill be ok with it.

On the subject of the episode i thought it was very well done. they set things up perfectly for the coming action, although im a little disappointed because i thought the hour special was going to be used to start the Pain stuff but maybe that will happen later?

  3. I’m glad for the gaiden, actually. There’s actually a lot we don’t know about Jiraiya. If I recall, Kishi wanted to highlight his student, Minato, more and I believe this is the track it will take – although we see Myobokuzan a bit early. These scenes are within his fatal battle with Pain. We’ll just have to see what happens.

I am very excited for the gaiden but also…dun, dun, duhhhhhhhhn…both the Itachi/Sasuke fight and the Pain arc (please don’t have that stupid thing last the better part of a year…).

  4. I almost cried while watching tsunade and jiraiya say goodbye :(..

I might be wrong but isn’t naruto supposed to eat one of itachis crows? I didn’t saw that in this episode (maybe i missed it..)

  5. @spofreak17 : You are right about what happens to Naruto However in the Manga it wasn’t revealed until Naruto recalls the event at a later time.

So maybe that’s the order that we will see it in the anime as well.

I am glad that they are putting some attention to Jiraya, like Penny said there is alot we don’t know about him. It will be bitter sweet to see him at his best in action in this suicide mission. 😦

  6. @supafreak/manny: yeah, it was just as Naruto finds out about Jiraiya’s death

  7. thanks.
