Naruto Shippuuden Episodes 127-128: Jiraiya, Jiraiya, Jiraiya! Is He Just a Perverted Sage?

Here's where it all began. Yup, that infamous bell test. Guess who got tied to the post? (psst, it's the guy on the left)

“A human child will stumble into Mount Myoboku and I will give that child the power of the toad and a prophecy…”

This is Penny (TsunadesTwin) back after an “off week” to a double episode where that lovable “Ero Sennin” is featured.  He is, by far, one of my all-time favorite Naruto characters.   He’s everyone’s favorite dirty old man with a strong love for Konoha – and an even stronger sense of what it is to be a shinobi.  Never mind he’s into toads in a big way.  In essence, of the Sannin, he is the moral compass; the conscience; the soul of what his role as a shinobi should be.   To me, he’s just one cool shinobi!

Like all boys,  he starts off as a guy after the girl.  And, of course, that girl is Tsunade (imagine her without boobs).    And, as it always starts for newly graduated Genin….yup, the bell test.  Hiruzen Sarutobi, then a Jonin (Niidaime Hokage was in charge then),  had a group of Genin, our memorable Sannin:  Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru.

And...who got stuck to the post? Gee, he's more like Naruto than we thought...

And...who got stuck to the post? Gee, he's more like Naruto than we thought...

After Jiraiya loses, it becomes clear to the Jonin known as “the Professor,” that Jiraiya has no focus or purpose to why he is a shinobi.  So…kuchyose no jutsu…and Hiruzen’s henchman, Enma the Monkey King, appears to the delight of Jiraiya.  But of course, it isn’t simple to sign a contract with any animal.  Nope.  So, as Orochimaru became fascinated with forbidden techniques, Jiraiya became obsessed with finding an animal to contract with.  Well, Hiruzen had good intentions…

Yeah, that was one big monkey! I'm just curious as to what he did...

Yeah, that was one big monkey! I'm just curious as to what he did...

Jiraiya trains…and trains…and trains (sound like any other shinobi we know???).  He thinks it’s to get Tsunade but realizes that his goal is to contract with an animal – any animal at this point.  Moulding chakra, chakra control exercises…you name it, he did it.  But, like another shinobi he will come to know in the future, he gets a little carried away – ok, VERY carried away, literally.  As Hiruzen watches in horror, Jiraiya makes the hand signs to summon –without a contract – and off he’s carried to this strange world, Mount Myoboku.  Geez, Jiraiya, couldn’t your life get any worse?

Imagine this being your first glimpse of Myoboku. When is Bunta NEVER pissed off?

Imagine this being your first glimpse of Myoboku. When is Bunta NEVER pissed off?

As a precursor to the future, we see a younger Gamabunta in the midst of a fight with a rather large snake.  Well, our hero, Jiraiya grabs hold of the tail and sends him off to Mars to the annoyance of Bunta (when is this guy NEVER annoyed?).  Bunta marvels that he has before him a human child and brings him before the Sages – yup, Pa and Ma toad and that “senile old fart.”  Turns out that “senile old fart,” had predicted Jiraiya’s dropping in at Myoboku:

Yeah, he kind of looks like Yoda, doesn't he?

Yeah, he kind of looks like Yoda, doesn't he?

Well, Jiraiya was told by his elder sage that he’s going to train in both Konoha and Mt. Myoboku.  Jiraiya was to do so until he got his “prophesy.”  And, he does…

Solely pervy, eh? Hopefully, there's more to it than THAT!

Solely pervy, eh? Hopefully, there's more to it than THAT!

“In my dream, you who are solely pervy, will still manage to become a splendid ninja…”

Niiiice!  Looks like he got that one right so far…

“In time, you will have your own disciple, a ninja who will bring about a great change to the ninja world…either great stability or great destruction the likes of which the world has never seen before…you will guide that revolutionary.  The day will come when you will be forced to make a critical selection…the choice will decide which way the change goes…”

He was also told he would travel far and write books.  On what?  No clear answers.  Where would he go?  Again, no clear answers.  But he is told that it may be to see all the wonders of “nature.”  What nature?  Again, it isn’t clear.  Well, as you can imagine, this is all Jiraiya begins to think about:  who this “revolutionary” is.  So, in order to find this special one, he sets off from Mt. Myoboku and Konoha and travels the entire continent.

So…he goes off in search of his “purpose,” and this “revolutionary” only to find that the embers of war are spreading everywhere.  There are omens everywhere that war is imminent – including a brief encounter of the man he would later fight and who would bestow upon him a great honor, Sannin, Hanzo the Salamander.  There is one encounter with a ninja that impacts him greatly.   One who challenges his notions of what it is like to be a shinobi; whether hatred will always exist in the ninja world.  Jiraiya, of course, realizes that the teachings of his sensei, the now Sondaime Hokage, have “stuck,” and he replies that he would change the ninja world; to remove the hatred.

Over time, his travels must end as he, Tsunade and Orochimaru, the three teammates from the very beginning, are now off to war – what has now been named the Third Ninja War (yes, the same one we saw in the Kakashi Gaiden).  The place of the battle is a place that we will all get to know quite well over the next few episodes – and for the time being -Amegakure.  This is where Hanzo the Salamander spares the lives of our three teammates and bestows upon them the name of “the Great Sannin” as testament to their enormous strength in battle.

As we all know, when we start to look for something, it becomes elusive.  The moment you stop looking for it, that “something” appears.  For Jiraiya, this is the case.  The newly-named Sannin were on a brief break, eating, while Orochimaru notes the presence of someone…who turns out to be a young boy, in search of food.   Jiraiya and Tsunade’s food is taken…while another young boy and a young girl appear.  The three:   Yahiko, Nagato and Konan.

Konan and, with his 'mop top,' Nagato...also future founding members of Akatsuki.

Later, as the Sannin are leaving their brief stop they find that the three hungry kids are following them.  Yahiko demands that they be tought ninjutsu while Konan has created an origami flower from the wrapper of the crackers they ate as a “thank you.”  Orochimaru, ever mistrustful, offers to kill the three as “war orphans,” that their lives would always be pitiful, painful and he would be doing them a favor.  Jiraiya, will have none of it and offers to stay with the three until they can fend for themselves, to the horror of Tsunade and Orochimaru.

Jiraiya becomes an adopted father for the three and it is not lost on Nagato, whom Yahiko calls “a baby.”  Yahiko then expresses words that leave a strong impact upon Jiraiya – that Yahiko wants revenge on those who use their lands for war; that the land is always crying (due to rain) – and wants to save his people from annihilation at the hands of others.

A promise that even Jiraiya can't help but notice...and gives him inspiration for his novel.

Soon after comes an incident that finally reveals Jiraiya’s “destiny.”  Konan rushes to Jiraiya – who can’t seem to write a damn thing – announcing that Yahiko and Nagato were in trouble.  What Jiraiya finds brings both shock and horror:  the presence of a dead Iwagakure shinobi – and Nagato possessing an eye technique thought to be folklore:  The Rinnegan, thought to be the most noble of the techniques.  As Jiraiya saw this, he realized his mission:  to train the three in ninjutsu.  Little did he know, he was training his “revolutionary.”

The eye of folklore becomes reality for Jiraiya. Is this also his "revolutionary" from his prophecy?

As Jiraiya trains the three in ninjutsu, he has his completed novel:  “The Legend of the Gutsy Ninja,” but he needs a protagonist; a name for his main character (for trivia:  this is the novel that sold NO copies).  As it turns out, the main chapter in question is the experience he had with the Fuma shinobi – with the exact words used.  However, he uses another quote – that he will break the curse of the ninja world and bring peace.  With a bowl of ramen half-eaten…he thinks of the main character’s name.

His first finished novel. But, who is the main character?

After three years, Jiraiya thinks he’s completed his mission and announces he is returning to Konoha.  The three now-well trained shinobi are devastated.   However, their Sensei gives them a mission:  to change Amegakure into a land of peace…

Jiraiya's sudden goodbye to his three students. Will they see each other again?

Jiraiya's sudden goodbye to his three students. Will they see each other again?

Not long after that, Jiraiya receives word that the three young shinobi have died.  As you can imagine, he is devastated by the news and wonders what his purpose is.  It is interesting that throughout this episode, you see Tsunade in a kinder, gentler manner – especially towards Jiraiya.   This makes me wonder what Tsunade’s true feelings for Jiraiya were – and are.  Dan may have been killed not long before but there is a definite chemistry between Jiraiya and Tsunade that is unmistakable.

Notice that these two are always together...even up until the end.

There is a flashforward scene that most of us have been awaiting.  Yes, the appearance of Minato and Kushina.  Jiraiya, Minato’s sensei, catches Minato reading “Legend of the Gutsy Ninja” to his delight.

Reading my book, eh? I wonder what Minato is thinking...?

Reading my book, eh? I wonder what Minato is thinking...?

Minato raves about how the chapters describe exploits from his many battles.  Jiraiya thinks he should add something “sexy” to his next one (Remember Icha Icha?).  To the shock of Jiraiya, Minato announces that he wants his child to be a shinobi – one exactly like his sensei.  Even more astounding, Minato knows he is having a son…and wants to name him after the main character in the story.  A very pregnant Kushina, who is seen for the first time, wholeheartedly agrees.  In Japan, naming your child after another person’s suggestion makes them a part of the family.  In this case, Jiraiya is the Godfather of this yet-to-be born child, which thrills him to no end.  Little does Jiraiya know, it would be over 12 years before he’d meet his Godson.

The radiant soon-to-be mother of Minato Namikaze's son: Kushina Uzumaki.

The name of this child would become Uzumaki Naruto…

That’s all I have but I have to warn you that, yet again, the animators are slacking off a bit and there will be NO Naruto Shippuuden next week.  But, on October 8th, watch out!  There will be one…

Author’s note:  We are now in the earliest stages of the Pain Arc.  I realize that this is the “Hunt for Itachi” arc and that you are awaiting Itachi’s and Sasuke’s battle.  Right now, it appears that the focus has shifted to Jiraiya’s *spoiler* impending death.*end of spoiler* For those who are ardent Jiraiya fans, I would keep your kleenex handy for the next few episodes…Itachi and Sasuke’s battle, based on information I have received will not air until October 29, 2009

  1. first? (lol i always wanted to say that at least once)

  2. anyway about this special, i liked the first episode for the backstory it gave on the paths, but the second episode was just taking flashbacks from their proper place and throwing them in here. anime only watchers will already have connected the dots between pain and nagato thanks to this. that is a shame because when i read the manga the mystery of who Pain is was one of the things that really got me interested in his character ( being extremly badass also got my attention) and also the minato flashback. moving that scene irritates me because jiriya’s death was made even moree powerful and emotional when, just as jiriya is dying, we see this flashback that shows us that jiriya is Naruto godfather. The family Naruto has always wanted and then just as we discover this jiriya dies. with that already shown i dont think it will have the same impact in the anime. anyway, looking forword to seeing Pain in action! although it comes at the cost of jiriya, my favorite character is finaly going to fight and im very happy!

  3. ='( jiraya…

  4. Awesome breakdown Penny ^_^ This was such a sad episode for me T_T but I liked seeing them focus on Jiraiya’s past. I also noticed that they were showing orochimaru’s descent to evil as well, as his conversations and actions were giving clues of his future intentions.

@Penny: I also strongly believe that Tsunade had a thing for Jiraiya because if you look at the part where they were in the cave, she was asking him where he was oing next and was asking him to settle down in Konoha. Maybe if jiraiya wasn’t such a rolling stone, he and tsunade would have been together…

  5. jiraiya… noo…. and again I’m running into my nightmare 😦
bad enough to read the manga… but… what’s worse than seeing him die a “second time”? thats cruel =(
